Systems which reply in a defined way to an external event within a specified time period. Speed is not necessarily a priority here.
The required reaction speed is based, in fact, on the environment or the partner object with the system in a concrete application cooperates. Fast digital closed-loop controls, for example, require real-time systems whose reaction times are in the microsecond range, automation solutions with memory-programmable controls by contrast manage with reaction times in the millisecond range and for slow system in the process industry, e.g. temperature controls, reaction times in the seconds range or even minutes are sufficient.
