Measure of the number of symbols transmitted per second. Also designated as symbol rate, symbol speed or step speed.
It is measured in the unit 'Baud' (named after Enile Baudot, the inventor of the Baudot telegraphs). If a symbol is represented by only one bit (0 or 1), the baud rate is equal to the bit rate. If a symbol contains several bits, the bit rate is greater than the baud rate.
